Freedom Rings in Gettysburg this Weekend
By
For many of us, the fourth of July is spent surrounded by the usual traditions – fireworks, barbecues in the backyards of our PA new homes topped off with cakes that look like the American Flag. How many of us truly take the time to reflect on the significance of the holiday and its impact on our society?
Our freedoms – voting, speaking, even arguing with one another all stem back to a critical 4th of July, 235 years ago when the Declaration of Independence was adopted. The fundamental ideals embodied in the Declaration of Independence have pushed our country to greatness through events like women’s suffrage and the civil rights movement.
Although the United States’ independence has been threatened by many wars, the American Civil War was perhaps the biggest threat to our democracy. The Battle at Gettysburg is recognized as the most critical battle of the American Civil War and ironically, occurred on July 1-3, 1863. Thousands perished, and many more were wounded and went missing. Despite the losses, it was a key victory for the Union Army under the leadership of General George Meade.
Today through Sunday, you can experience the entire battle re-created in front of your eyes to commemorate the 148th anniversary of this very important battle. We really can’t think of a better place or way to celebrate our independence than taking time to recognize the sacrifices others have made for our own freedoms.
For those of you who decide to make the trek this weekend, don’t forget to visit us at Deatrick Village, our resort-style community of Gettysburg new homes located adjacent to the Gettysburg battlefield. We will be honoring our freedom with a few events of our own this Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. Refreshments, food, and tours of the community are available – even air conditioning! So, whether you are just driving through town and need a break or if you are considering a move to this historic Gettysburg area, we would love to see you.
Regardless of whether you make the trek to Gettysburg this weekend, remember to take time to reflect on the very reason we have the freedom to celebrate our national holiday this weekend.
